If you like bananas, these Frosted Banana Cookies might just be a dream come true (hee-hee).
Frosted Banana Cookies
Years ago I lived a short time in Manhattan, KS. I was serving on staff at one of the local churches as the Children’s Pastor and rented out a room from a woman in the church who introduced me to this delicious recipe. I’ve been hooked ever since.
Whenever I have some bananas that are a little too ripe, guess what recipe comes to mind? Bingo… these banana cookies.
Frosted Banana Cookies
Ingredients
Cookies:
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 2 medium mashed bananas
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp soda
- 2 cups flour
Frosting
- 6 tbsp Brown Sugar
- 4 tbsp Cream or Milk
- 4 tbsp margarine
- Powdered Sugar as needed
Instructions
Cookies:
- Set Oven to 350˚
- Cream shortening, brown sugar and vanilla. Add eggs and bananas.
- Sift dry ingredients and add to wet mixture.
- Drop on non-stick cookie sheet by teaspoon.
- You can press down the dough or leave in drops.
- Place in the oven for 10 minutes or until set and golden brown.
Frosting:
- Bring to brown sugar, milk and margarine to a boil.
- Continue to boil until sugar is dissolved. Add powdered sugar until frosting is spreadable.
- Drizzle over cooled cookies on the cookie sheet or cooling rack.

Nicky Riess says
Kelly, I am wondering if I could use butter instead of margarine in the frosting… would the frosting still come out the same?
Kelly Rowe says
Hi Nicky! I honestly don’t know and I hate to say, “go for it” and it be a complete flop. Feel free to experiment, but I can’t say that I have tried it and it’s worked. I wish I could be of more help. Keep me posted if you do try the substitution. Hugs!

Doubt you’ll even see this since your original post is so old, but thought I’d throw it out there. I was just getting ready to make these cookies. I noticed I’d made some comments to myself in the margin…couldn’t decipher what I was trying to remind myself! Came to Google to see what some other recipes looked like. That’s when I found YOUR POST! I live in Manhattan, KS and got this recipe from a lady named Connie that I worked with at Stonecreek Family Physicians in the early 2000s! What a coincidence! Little old Manhattan, KS and banana cookies…CRAZY! BTW- figured out the note. It was just to remind me of the consistency of the frosting! Lol!
Kelly Rowe says
Hi Kirsten. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment 🙂 How ironic that we both got our hands on this yummy recipe in Manhattan, KS? Soooo cRazY! I’m officially craving a batch. Enjoy!!
