I have a confession to make.
Ready?
I’m guilty of buying hot cocoa bombs from a local business. Yep, I’ve actually placed two orders. But then I decided that maybe I should try my hand at it.
Sidenote: sometimes, as a blogger, it’s hard to know when to just buy something or when to make it. Seriously, the struggle is real, friends.
Nevertheless, I’m certainly a BIG hot cocoa fan, so it only made sense to at least give it a shot. And these Valentine’s Day Hot Cocoa Bombs were a timely creative outlet.
These would undoubtedly make great gifts too. Place them in a cupcake liner and gifting them individually in cellophane bags, tied with ribbon. In addition to a yummy treat, it’s fun and simple.
So, let’s get this hot cocoa deliciousness started.
What is Hot Cocoa Bombs?
Hot Cocoa Bombs (also known as Hot Chocolate Bombs) is a hollow sphere of chocolate with a delicious and unexpected surprise inside. While pouring hot milk or water over the hot cocoa bomb, the shell melts and hot cocoa and marshmallows are a pleasant surprise.
How do your store Hot Chocolate Bombs?
Hot Chocolate Bombs contain no perishables, so they can be stored at room temperature, in the refrigerator, or in the freezer. It’s recommended that they’re consumed within 2 weeks. Honestly, mine don’t last that long.
Making Valentine’s Day Hot Cocoa Bombs
Supplies:
Ghirardelli Chocolate Melting Wafers
Sphere Silicone Mold
Hot Cocoa Mix
Mini Marshmallows
Heart Marshmallows* (optional)
Additional Candy Melts and Sprinkles, for decorating
*I found my heart marshmallows at TJ Maxx.
** Additional resource for candy melts.
Instructions:
Making the Chocolate Molds
Start by melting the chocolate according to the directions on the package.
Secondly, place the sphere silicone mold on a cookie sheet (optional). I used a small cookie sheet, keeping the molds stable when placing them in the refrigerator.
Add melted chocolate to each of the sphere molds using a spoon. Then you’re going to spread the chocolate up the sides, making sure the entire cavity is evenly coated with the chocolate. However, you can do a couple of thin layers, refrigerating between the layers if you’d like as well.
Refrigerate the molds for 5-10 minutes. Meanwhile, feel free to strategize your decorating ideas.
Remove the molds from the refrigerator and place the molds upside down on the counter (or tray). In addition, we’re now going to remove the chocolate spheres from the mold. Place the chocolate halves on a tray, plate, or parchment paper.
Assembling Valentine Hot Cocoa Bombs
Place a microwave-safe plate in the microwave and warm, heating for approximately 2 minutes. Remove the plate from the microwave and place it where you’ll be assembling the spheres. In short, the fun is about to begin.
Fill three of the chocolate halves with hot cocoa mix and marshmallows.
After that, take one of the empty chocolate halves and place it seam-side down on the warm plate. Gently twist each of the chocolate halves, melting and cleaning up the edges.
Remove and place on top of the halves containing the hot chocolate and marshmallows. This will, however, seal the two halves, making the sphere complete.
Thereafter, you’ll complete these Valentine treats by decorating the hot cocoa bombs with melted color chocolate, sprinkles, etc.
Making Hot Chocolate with Hot Cocoa Bombs
Place the sphere of chocolate goodness in an oversized mug.
Heat up 1 cup of milk (or water) and slowly pour over the chocolate ball. During the pouring, be sure to watch for the excitement of the hot chocolate and marshmallows making their debut.
Above all, enjoy this cup of goodness.
