Rolo Pretzel Sandwiches, the Perfect Christmas Treat

Rolo Pretzel Sandwiches are a classic sweet-and-salty treat that’s incredibly easy to make but always a crowd-pleaser. They’re the perfect addition to your holiday table or a thoughtful gift for friends and family. Here’s why they’re so loved:

1. Simple to Make: This treat requires minimal ingredients and is so easy to prepare. It’s the perfect recipe for those last-minute holiday gatherings or for a quick gift that looks as good as it tastes.

2. Sweet + Salty Perfection: The combination of crispy pretzels with the gooey caramel inside the Rolo candy, all covered with a creamy white chocolate coating, is nothing short of addictive. The salty crunch from the pretzel perfectly balances the sweetness of the caramel and chocolate.

3. Festive and Fun: These treats are incredibly versatile. You can customize the toppings, such as adding colorful sprinkles or crushed candy canes, making them a fun and festive addition to your Christmas celebrations.

4. Gift-Worthy: Pack these little treats into cute gift bags or tins, and they make the perfect homemade holiday gift. It’s a thoughtful and tasty way to spread holiday cheer without breaking the bank.

5. Kid-Friendly: These treats are great for kids, too! Kids can even get involved in the assembly process with no complicated techniques, making it a fun family activity.

Equipment:

Baking tray
Parchment paper
Microwave-safe bowl
Spatula or spoon

Step-by-Step Instructions

Making Rolo Pretzel Sandwiches is a breeze, and you’ll be snacking on these treats in no time! Follow these simple steps to create the perfect batch of holiday goodness.

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare Your Baking Sheet

Start by preheating your oven to 250°F (120°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper to prevent the treats from sticking and for easy cleanup.

Next, arrange 40 pretzel snaps on the tray in a single layer. If you prefer other types of pretzels, like mini twists or waffle rounds, feel free to substitute them. Just make sure they’re the right size to sandwich the Rolos.

Then, unwrap the 40 Rolo candies and place one on each pretzel.

Step 2: Bake the Rolos and Pretzels

Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 3-4 minutes, or until the Rolos are soft but not fully melted. You want the Rolos to soften just enough so that you can press them into a gooey, caramel-filled sandwich with the other pretzel.

Be careful not to overbake, as the caramel can start to ooze out if you leave them in the oven for too long.

Step 3: Assemble the Rolo Pretzel Sandwich

After baking, remove the tray from the oven. Now comes the fun part! Take another pretzel snap and place it on top of each softened Rolo. Gently press down to flatten the Rolo and form a sandwich.

Don’t press too hard—just enough to slightly smoosh the Rolo between the pretzels without letting the caramel spill out from the sides.

Once all the sandwiches are assembled, transfer the tray to the refrigerator and chill for about 20 minutes. This will allow the chocolate to harden and the treats to set.

Step 4: Melt the White Chocolate Coating

While the sandwiches are chilling, it’s time to melt the Ghirardelli white vanilla melting wafers. Place the wafers into a microwave-safe bowl and heat them on a low or defrost setting in the microwave in 30-second increments.

Stir the chocolate after each interval until it’s fully melted and smooth. Be patient with this step to ensure the chocolate doesn’t burn.

Step 5: Dip each Sandwich

Once the sandwiches have chilled and the chocolate is ready, it’s time for dipping. Dip each Rolo pretzel sandwich halfway into the melted white chocolate, ensuring the chocolate covers the bottom half of the sandwich. Gently shake off any excess chocolate.

At this time, place the coated sandwiches back onto the parchment-lined baking tray. While the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle some Christmas sprinkles mix on top for a festive touch.

Feel free to get creative and use crushed candy canes, colorful M&Ms, or other holiday-themed candies.

Step 6: Chill Again and Set

Return the tray to the refrigerator for another 10-20 minutes to allow the white chocolate to set. Once the chocolate coating is firm, your Rolo Pretzel Sandwiches are ready to serve and enjoy!

Customizing Your Sandwiches

One of the best things about these treats is their versatility. You can customize them for different holidays, events, or personal tastes. Here are a few fun variations you can try:

  • Change the Pretzels: While pretzel snaps are the most popular choice, you can use mini pretzel twists, pretzel crisps, or even pretzel waffles (rounds) for a different texture. The round waffle-style pretzels, in particular, make for a more sophisticated and uniform look.
  • Switch Up the Candy: While milk chocolate Rolos are a classic choice, feel free to get creative with different types of candy. Try dark chocolate Rolos, salted caramel Rolos, or even peanut butter cups. You could also experiment with other candies like Hershey’s Kisses or Milky Way miniatures.
  • Use Different Coatings: Instead of white chocolate, you can use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or candy melts in red, green, or gold to match your holiday theme. You could even drizzle the chocolate instead of dipping for a more artistic look.
  • Add Flavored Sprinkles or Toppings: Top your sandwiches with something extra-special, like crushed candy canes, holiday M&Ms, or even a dusting of edible glitter for a bit of sparkle.
  • Change Up the Sprinkles: To make these treats fit other holidays, swap out the red, green, and white Christmas sprinkles for colors and shapes that match the occasion, like heart-shaped sprinkles for Valentine’s Day or pastel sprinkles for Easter.

Storing and Enjoying Your Rolo Pretzel Sandwiches

Once you’ve made your Rolo Pretzel Sandwiches, it’s essential to store them properly to keep them fresh and delicious.

  • If you plan to eat or give the sandwiches away within a few days, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They should last for up to 2 weeks.
  • To extend their shelf life, refrigerate the sandwiches in an airtight container. They will stay fresh for up to three weeks in the fridge.

Equipment

  • Parchment Paper
  • Baking Sheet
  • Medium Mixing Bowl

Ingredients

  • 80 pretzel snaps (or mini twists, waffle rounds etc)
  • 40 milk chocolate Rolos
  • 10 oz bag of Ghirardelli white vanilla melting wafers
  • 1/4 cup Christmas sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Arrange 40 pretzel snaps in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Place an unwrapped Rolo candy on top of each pretzel.
  • Bake the pretzel and Rolo candies in the oven for 3–4 minutes, just until the Rolos soften but remain intact (not fully melted).
  • Remove the tray from the oven and gently press another pretzel snap on top of each softened Rolo, forming a sandwich. Avoid pressing too hard to prevent the caramel from oozing out. Refrigerate the tray for 20 minutes or until the chocolate hardens.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the candy wafers in 30-second intervals on a low heat or defrost setting. Stir after each interval until smooth and fully melted.
  • Remove the chilled sandwiches from the refrigerator. Dip each sandwich halfway into the melted candy coating, letting the excess drip off. Place the dipped sandwich back onto the baking sheet and sprinkle immediately with festive decorations. Work quickly, as the coating will set fast on the chilled sandwiches.
  • Repeat the dipping and decorating process for all sandwiches. Once done, refrigerate the tray for 10–20 minutes or until the candy coating is completely set.
  • Your Rolo Pretzel Sandwiches are now ready to serve! Share and enjoy this sweet and salty holiday treat.

Notes

  • Feel free to halve, double, or triple the recipe depending on how many sandwiches you want to make.
  • Try different Rolo flavors like milk chocolate or dark salted caramel. You can substitute with other candies such as mini peanut butter cups, Hershey’s Kisses, Milky Way bites, or Cadbury squares.
  • If you prefer a different shape, use mini pretzel twists, pretzel waffles (rounds), pretzel crisps, or pretzel flats.
  • Swap the sprinkles to match different celebrations. For added flair, drizzle melted candy melts in festive colors.
  • You can replace white melting wafers with almond bark, white chocolate chips, or regular chocolate. You can also experiment with colorful candy melts to suit the occasion.
Storing:
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
  • Keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
