We all {love} snacks — some of us probably snack a little healthier than others {hee-hee}. Fruit, Vegetables, French Fries, Chips, Popcorn, etc. Snack come in all shapes, sizes and calorie counts. Yesterday I shared a fun Back to School Craft with edible Pencil Treats. Today I thought I’d share a fun twist for an afternoon or after school snack: Cake Fries! These faux fries would also make a fun dessert that I’m sure the whole family will go wild over.
A few months ago, I was getting lost on Pinterest (I’m sure you can relate) and saw some faux fries. I was like, “huh?” Of course I clicked through to find they were cake fries made from pound cake. Surprisingly enough, they’ve been around for quite some time. Upon Googling it, I saw posts from 2009. Regardless, I had to make them and share them with you. Why? Well, your kids and/or family will LOVE them and it’s super fun! If I was a mommy, I’m pretty sure I’d have these in the queue for an afternoon snack! I loved that Sweet and Crumby made them for an April Fools Day prank on her family. I thought that was awesome! Anywho, let’s get to some snacking fun with these warm and crunchy cake fries!
Afternoon Snack | Cake Fries
Ingredients
- 1 loaf pound cake
- 1/4 cup of powdered sugar
- 1 Tablespoon of milk
- Red Food Coloring
Instructions
For the Cake Fries
- Using a crinkle cutter, cut pound cake into thick slices
- Continue to cut 4-5 cake fries from each slice
- Preheat Broiler
- Place cake fry sticks on cookie sheet
- Allow them to brown (watch closely).
For the Ketchup Sauce
- Mix 1/4 cup of powdered sugar with 1 Tablespoon of milk and stir. (Add water or sugar as necessary for desired consistency).
- Add red food coloring until deep red
Sounds easy enough right? I did try making a Tastefully Simple Pound Cake for this; however, it wasn’t dense enough to see the crinkle cuts, so I used a frozen Sara Lee Pound Cake. You also might want to try this yummy Raspberry Sauce instead of the ‘ketchup.’
I never imagined pound cake tasting so yummy warm. It was tasty and the ‘ketchup’ added that extra bit of sweetness. Enjoy!
I’ll be partying {here and here}.
