Have I mentioned how much I love my dogs? Being that I don’t have kids and fight the good fight of infertility, my furry friends are my pride and joy! And, yes, they are spoiled! My dogs love peanut butter! In addition to peanut butter, pumpkin is another flavor dog’s love. I had a few different dog treat recipes that I pulled from to make one of my own: Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats.
A few weeks ago, my mom was in town visiting and I thought it would be fun for us to make some homemade dog treats for all the doggies! My sister has a mini schnauzer and my parents have a beautiful havanese. Soooo, we went and ahead and did some shopping for some ingredients and went to work.
Homemade Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 2 cups white rice flour
- 1 cup wheat germ
- 7.5 oz can pumpkin
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp peanut butter
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly to combine.
- Roll out dough on floured surface to about 1/4-inch thick. Using a cookie cutter, cut into bone shapes. Combine dough scraps and continue to roll out and cut into shapes until all the dough has been used.
- Place cookies on ungreased foil-lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated 325 oven for 30-35 minutes.
Tails were wagging with excitement as they all enjoyed these delicious treats! Peanut Butter and Pumpkin for the win.

what is the shelf of these nice treats we are making for a rescue center and want to make sure they have a long shelf life.
Kelly Rowe says
Hi Linda! As long as they are completely cooled and kept in an air tight container, I would imagine they would have a healthy shelf life. I read an article that suggested the following:
Refrigerator: Using an airtight container is the best way to go. If you use this, your treats can last for at least 2 months in the refrigerator.
Freezer: If you use an airtight container your homemade dog cookies should last for at least 8 months in the freezer.
Hope that helps! Thanks so much for stopping by! Hugs.

my dog cannot have any kind of rice. is there any other kind of Gluten Free flour that I can use.
thank you. Pat.
Kelly Rowe says
Hi Pat! I’m sure you could substitute the rice flour with a gluten free flour. My guess would be any flour that is safe for dogs will work š Enjoy!
Amanda says
I’m wondering how drastically doing so will alter the cooking times… I’ve had such a hard time trying to cook with gluten free flour š
Cathy Jacobson says
Kelly, I have two beagles, Casie a 7 year old male and Harley a two yr old female. Have always had beags….but Harley is my first girl. And as with all girls, they give their mom a run for my money. Harley has an allergy to rice….and the pumpkin peanut butter cookies sound wonderful, BUT can’t use white or rice flour….can you suggest something else to use that would give the same consistency? They would both love these, and I have to admit they sound good enough for a class of milk for me, too. Thanks so much
Beags slobbery smooches
Amanda says
These look like fun! Just curious, do you know how well they would come out if I used gluten free flour (like Bob’s Red Mill)? I’m wondering how drastically that would alter the recipe… Anyways, thanks for the great idea!
P.S. – Have you tried them yourself? I love the idea of a treat I can share with my pup! (without the guilt of “human food”)
Louis says
Wow ā that looks so easy! Iām going to try it!
