Lentil Soup. Warm up with a bowl of this hearty winter soup — and ring in the New Year with a German tradition.
I shared some Christmas Traditions with you earlier this month. As we prepare to ring in the New Year, I thought I’d share a family New Years tradition. Hearty Lentil Soup. Another german tradition that the Kuerts have been carrying on for years. Growing up, we were always in church on New Years Eve welcoming in the new year with prayer. We would then head home to enjoy a bowl of lentil soup. The churches we’ve attended here in St. Louis don’t have New Years Eve services, which I think is a shame (just my two cents), so we usually just stay home and watch the ball drop. There’s a lot of activities we could opt in to attend, but the older I get the less I enjoy the large crowds and loud drunks {giggle}. So, if we stay up, we always enjoy a bowl of soup!
However, the tradition is that if you eat a bowl of lentil soup on New Years day, it will bring you good luck/fortune throughout the new year. Does it work? Who knows! I still {love} the tradition and I {love, love, love} the soup!! It’s a perfect winter meal too. Paired with warm rolls, you’re in for a real treat.
Hearty Lentil Soup
Ingredients
Instructions
- Bring 4 quarts of water to a boil and add cut up celery and lentils.
- Add cut up potatoes and onion into the boiling water when lentils are done.
- Fry a handful of knockwurst in flour and water. This will get lumpy and thick. Add to soup along with the remaining knockwurst.
- Simmer 1-1/2 hours and serve.
Care to stay in the loop? I’d love to have you!

My grandmother, who is German use to make us Lentil Soup and I haven’t had it for many years. Like you I don’t like crowds or drunks, so I’ll be staying in. Might just have to make this tonight…nice way to ring in the new year.
Happy New Year!

Now this sounds delicious! Something I could eat, I’m not a huge lentil fan, but this I will be trying! Thanks for sharing your recipe.
