DIY Halloween Vignette

This simple DIY Halloween Vignette sets the mood for a dark little village.  The only thing it’s missing is some rolling hills and fog.  Haha.  This project really does make for some great indoor or outdoor decor (if you have a covered porch).

Halloween may not be one of my favorite holidays, but I sure do have fun creating some projects and inspiration for you.  Like this Steampunk Pumpkin or these party favors made using peat pots.

Black and Gray Birdhouses on a BenchDIY Halloween Vignette

I saw a picture on Pinterest from Better Homes and Gardens that inspired today’s project.  What I loved about the idea was that it was a simple DIY Halloween project, it wasn’t too spooky and it was different.

I had the bench on-hand and got all of the birdhouses (except one, I think) for 50% off.  Between the paint and the birdhouses, this cost me about $15-$20.  Hellooooo, not too shabby, right?

Halloween Birdhouses on a Gray BenchBuying the faux black branches added a little more to the cost, but you don’t have to do that. Actually,  you could use real sticks.  Free for the win.

I’ll share the steps to what I did below, but first I wanted you to see some other inspiration from some of my gal pals.  And a BIG thanks to Kristen from Ella Claire & Co. for organizing this blog hop.

Prepare to be inspired by all kinds of DIY Halloween fun.  Not interested in additional inspiration?  No problem, feel free to scroll down to the end of the post for my list of supplies and tutorial.

Ready to dive into what you can do to recreate this decor?  Let’s do it.

Supplies for DIY Halloween Vignette

Unfinished Birdhouses
Acrylic Paint*
Paint Brushes
Faux black branches
Spanish Moss

*I used Craftsmart Paint from Michael’s in Deep Gray, Black, and Dark Gray.

Step One:

Unfinished birdhouses

Paint the birdhouses using acrylic paint.  I used foam brushes for these because I was able to get a lot more coverage faster.  Painting a couple of coats might be necessary as the wood will absorb some of the paint.

Step Two:

Find a bench you have hidden away in your basement, garage or attic.  Another great option is a mantle or dresser.

Step Three:

Arrange your birdhouses and use a couple of faux branches or real tree branches to add a little extra charm.  For the branches, I used a wire cutter to cut off a couple of branches and stood them up using floral pin frogs.  I scattered some Spanish Moss on the trees too.

Close Up Shot of Halloween BirdhousesAnd you’re done!  Yay.  Pretty easy peasy, right?

Sometimes you try to take a photograph from a different angle that just doesn’t want to work…. and one of your dogs photobombs the picture.  HA!

Totally love your birdhouse vignette! How cute. I wish I had your ingenuity – I would never have thought of painting them black, white, and gray and using them for Halloween/fall. So clever, and so cute! I’ll be on the lookout for old birdhouses I can spray paint and use for things like this!
