When You’re in a Funk (Real Life Version)

Every now and then, I find myself in a bit of a funk… and I don’t even know why.

Nothing major. Nothing dramatic. Just that quiet, lingering feeling where motivation is low, creativity feels stuck, and even the simplest things take a little more effort than usual.

If you’ve ever been there too, you know exactly what I mean.

It’s not sadness, exactly. It’s not burnout in the huge, obvious sense either. It’s just… off. A little foggy. A little slower. A little harder to get moving.

And while I don’t have all the answers (because let’s be honest—who does?), I’ve learned a few gentle ways to move through these seasons without putting too much pressure on myself to “snap out of it.”

Because sometimes, a funk doesn’t need to be fixed. It just needs a little space.

What It Really Feels Like When You’re in a Funk

For me, it usually shows up quietly.

I might notice I’m less excited about things I normally enjoy. Tasks that usually come easily suddenly feel a little heavier. My creativity slows down, and even deciding what to make for dinner feels like a whole thing.

And the tricky part? There’s not always a clear reason why.

That’s what can make it frustrating. There’s nothing specific to solve, no obvious problem to fix—just a general sense of feeling out of sync.

And if I’m being honest, sometimes I catch myself wondering, Why do I feel this way when everything is actually… okay?

How to Stop Trying to “Fix” a Funk

One of the biggest shifts for me has been this: Not every funk needs a solution.

We live in a world that loves a quick fix—five steps to feel better, ten ways to boost your mood, a checklist to get your groove back. And while those things can be helpful, they can also make you feel like you’re doing something wrong if they don’t work right away.

Sometimes, you’re just in a slower season. And sometimes… that slower season has a purpose, even if you can’t quite see it yet.

Instead of trying to rush through it, I’ve learned to ease up a little. To stop asking, “How do I fix this?” and start asking, “What do I need today?”

That one small shift changes everything.

Simple Ways to Feel Better When You’re in a Funk

When I’m in a funk, I don’t aim for big, life-changing moves. I keep things simple—small, doable things that feel manageable.

Here are a few that have been helping me lately:

Getting Outside and Resetting Your Mind

There’s something about fresh air that resets things, even just a little.

A quick walk around the neighborhood, a few minutes sitting on the porch, or just stepping outside to soak in the quiet—it doesn’t solve everything, but it softens the edges.

And lately, I’ve been trying to notice the little things… the way the trees are starting to bud, the sound of birds in the morning, the slow return of color after a long winter.

It reminds me of this verse:

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning…” — Lamentations 3:22–23

A quiet reminder that even when things feel a little off, each day brings a fresh start.

This reminds me of something a dietician once shared with me—that one not-so-great choice doesn’t have to derail the whole day or week. You just move forward and make the next choice a better one. In reality, I think that applies to more than just food.

How Giving Yourself Grace Can Change Everything

On these days, I give myself permission to do less.

Not in a “give up” kind of way—but in a realistic, grace-filled way.

Instead of a long to-do list, I pick one or two things. That’s it.

And if those things get done? That’s a win.

There’s a lot of freedom in remembering that you don’t have to earn rest or prove your worth through productivity.

Grace was never meant to be something we hustle for. Amen?

Creative Things to Do When You Feel Stuck

This one has been big for me.

When your creativity is tied to productivity or expectations, it can feel impossible to start. So instead, I try to do something small and low-pressure—no end goal, no “this has to turn into something.”

Just creating for the sake of creating.

Messy crafting. Playing with paper. Rearranging things. Even flipping through ideas without committing to anything.

Sometimes I think that creative spark is a gift—and even the smallest expression of it can help us feel a little more like ourselves again.

Finding Peace Through Quiet Time and Devotionals

When I’m feeling off, I’ve noticed that constant input doesn’t help.

Scrolling, comparing, consuming—it can make the fog feel heavier.

So sometimes I step back a bit. Not in an all-or-nothing way, but just enough to create a little quiet.

And lately, one thing that’s been helping me is incorporating a simple devotional into my day. I used to be so good about starting every day with a devotion, then I wasn’t. Nothing long or complicated—just a few minutes to pause, reflect, and reset my perspective.

I know that’s not for everybody, and that’s okay. But for me, it’s been a small step in the right direction.

Even just reading a short passage like this one:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

…has a way of softening things.

Sometimes I’ll follow it with a simple prayer. “Lord, I don’t know what I need—but You do.” And somehow, that’s enough.

There are mornings when my quiet time feels focused and meaningful… and others when my mind wanders the whole time.

But I’m learning that showing up—even imperfectly—still matters.

Why It’s Okay to Rest During a Funk

This one sounds simple… but it’s not always easy. Rest without guilt.

Not earned rest. Not “I’ll rest once everything is done” rest. Just rest.

Sometimes your mind and body are asking for a pause, and sometimes your soul is too. And there’s no shame in that.

A Gentle Reminder for When You’re Feeling Off

Here’s the truth I keep coming back to: You’re not supposed to feel “on” all the time.

What we tend to see online are the highlight reels—not much of the B-roll. The polished moments, the wins, the picture-perfect snapshots. But what we don’t often see are the slower days, the struggles, or the in-between moments that don’t quite make it there.

And real life? It’s made up of both.

Life is hard for a lot of people right now, even if we don’t always see it.

Life has rhythms. High-energy seasons and slower ones. Creative bursts and quiet stretches. Motivation and… well, not so much motivation.

And even in Scripture, we see seasons of waiting, resting, and wandering.

So if you’re in a slower season right now, it doesn’t mean you’re stuck.

It might just mean you’re being held.

What to Do When You’re in a Funk Right Now

Let me just say this:

You don’t need to have it all figured out.

You don’t need to rush your way out of it.

You don’t need to explain it or justify it.

You can take a breath. Take a step back. Take things one small moment at a time.

And if you’re a person of faith, you can also rest in this:

You are not walking through this season alone.

Even here—especially here—God is present.

Even In the Stillness

If you’ve been feeling a little off lately, I hope this reminds you that you’re not alone.

These quiet seasons come and go, and while they’re not always comfortable, they’re often where we learn to slow down, reset, and give ourselves a little more grace.

No pressure. No big expectations.

Just one small step at a time.

And maybe, along the way, a quiet reminder that even in the stillness… something meaningful is growing.
