I absolutely LOVE frames, pictures and DIY Chalkboards.  I feel like they allow me to leave pieces of history around the house — whether in the form of a picture or in an amazing old quote.  So when I was recently asked to work with Cut It Out Frames on a review and giveaway, I was thrilled!  I saw their frames at SNAP and loved them.  Here’s my stash… and they’re all fabulous!

My stash of Cut it Out Frames! Love.Balboa 16×20 | Brooklyn 8×10 | Newport 5×7 (2)
Chandler 5×7 | Chandler 4×6 | Grace (Oval) 4×6

I wanted to do a gallery wall with the bottom six, but with the holidays quickly approaching, life is a little cray-cray, so I couldn’t make it happen.  I decided to go with the other project I had in mind, using the 16×20 Balboa frame to make a DIY Chalkboard using a thin plywood and one of the Cut It Out Frames for my work room!  The process is very similar to my DIY Kitchen Chalkboard, except I painted the frame.

DIY Chalkboard using Plywood and a Cut It Out Wood Cutout at livelaughrowe.comI love how the pop of yellow contrasts with the black chalkboard!  Let’s take a quick look at how I put this together in just a few easy steps! Are you ready?

The cut out of the frame is 16×20, so I started by cutting out my thin plywood (a little under 1/4″ thick) to fit into the frame.

DIY ChalkboardI painted the chalkboard with a chalkboard paint from Lowe’s (not pictured), then moved onto priming and painting the frame.  I decided to prime the frame so that the color would be true to color I chose.  Without the primer, the yellow was muted and that’s not what I was going for.

Priming the FrameI applied three coats of a dark yellow acrylic paint to ensure even coverage and the bright yellow I was looking for.

Painting the FrameI did sand the edges and add a little brown watered down acrylic paint to the trim to add a little dimension as well.  That’s it!  I think it turned out pretty fabulous and adds a pop of sunshine in the room.

DIY Chalkboard with Cut It Out Frames at livelaughrowe.comCloser Look at DIY Chalkboard using plywood and a wood cutoutI love having it in my creative space now!  I think it might become an inventory board for my shop…  we’ll see!  The room does seem to be getting smaller and smaller… haha!  I know that’s not possible, I think the problem is I’m getting more and more crafting supplies and I have less room to store it!  Maybe I can convince the hubs to finish the basement in 2014 for a larger work space!  {cross your fingers with me, okay?}

Happy Crafting!
