Are you willing to finish strong? Make your dreams come true?
Did you know that at the peak of my career I was a Director of Admissions for a college? So, you can imagine, Higher Education is near and dear to me. If there is one thing I will never regret — it was getting my Bachelors Degree in Communications. Was it easy? Nope! Did it require a lot of hard work and discipline? You bet! However, that degree has allowed me to do things I never imagined and succeed in arenas I didn’t even know existed.
At the time, I even chose to live off campus and worked two part time jobs while I was in college to make things work. Why on earth would I do that? Well, campus living wasn’t for me and I was determined to make it work. I’ve been working since I was sixteen years old. If I could work and be on the National Honor Society in High School, I could certainly work and attend college!

Where are you going with all of this, Kelly? Well, I wanted to share my passion for Higher Ed with all of you and encourage those of you who might be on the fence of going to college — or even going back to college to finish strong! It’s never too late! You can reach those goals and dreams TODAY! The web has opened doors of opportunity for working adults of all ages to go back to school, get that degree or finish that degree they’ve always wanted. Isn’t that exciting??
Have you heard about Western Governors University (WGU)? Maybe you’ve seen the commercial on television. It recently aired locally and I remember saying to my husband, “that was awesome.”
If you’re not familiar with WGU, it’s a nonprofit, accredited university. Their number one goal is to address the obstacles facing working adults who are looking to advance or enter a new phase of their career. Those every day obstacles each of us faces, such as budget and schedule restraints.
WGU has a unique story to tell. It was founded by the governors of 19 U.S. states! I don’t know about you, but I think that is awesome! At no other time in the history of higher education have the governors of several states joined together to create a university. They’ve invested in us — YOU!
If there are two things (other than financing) that should be considered when deciding on which college to attend, it is accreditation and it being a good fit. These were always important talking points when speaking with prospective students during events and/or recruitment trips. I stressed these points to each and every one of them.
Here I am talking with a prospective student (circa 2005)
So, it was refreshing to see that WGU has the same accreditation as state universities and private colleges. As an admissions counselor, I spoke with a number of students who had college credits that were from non-accredited colleges and they were devastated. Accreditation is so important, friends.
As a prospective student, it’s essential to find a school that is a good fit. Do they offer the courses your looking for? Can you afford it? Is it on-line or classroom based? WGU is competency based (passing the tests and assignments is the measure of success – not the times spent in a class) and their programs offer a great deal of flexibility, where you can learn anywhere and any time convenient for you! And if you worried about cost — their graduates are also finding better paying jobs that will more than pay for their education.
WGU has four main areas of focus: Business, information technology, education, and nursing. If you or a friend or loved one is at a cross roads in deciding whether to further their education or enter a new phase of their life, visit with WGU for more information.
“It’s a school without boundaries—
there aren’t any teachers, curriculums are personalized,
and students can go at their own pace.” – CNN
