A whimsical, mechanical looking pumpkin? This DIY Steampunk Pumpkin seems to fit the bill.
No-Carve DIY Steampunk Pumpkin
This is soooo out of my comfort zone… ya think? As many of you know, I don’t “do” Halloween, but I do try to do a couple of projects each year. I guess it’s more or less like a challenge. {hee-hee}
So, where did this idea come from? Well, a few weeks ago I was watching an episode of Tiny House Nation. The gal building a tiny house had a ‘steampunk’ style. I was like, “what is that?” According to wikipedia, “Steampunk refers to a subgenre of science fiction and sometimes fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery.” Interesting, huh?
Well, fast forward to a week or so ago when I got a flyer in the mail from Yankee Candle — and wouldn’t you know that the steampunk theme was stealing the show, (aka Steam Punkins)! The tea light holder inspired me to give it a try. To be honest, it’s SUPER easy and a great craft to do with the kiddos!
Supplies for DIY Steampunk Pumpkin:
Craft Pumpkin
Tacky Glue (Fast Grab or Quick Dry)
Black Acrylic Paint
Accessories (nuts, bolts, screws, washers, etc)
Sponge Brush (or rag)
Drill, optional
Screwdriver
I decided not to bore you with a step by step, as you really do just put your creativeness and random nuts and bolts to good use. Round up some things you have on-hand in our garage and hit the hardware aisle at our local Home Depot. Using some chains from my jewelry stash (or supplies) is a great resource too. Seriously, the possibilities are endless. There doesn’t have to be any rhyme or reason. YAY! It’s a matter of finding random pieces and creating a whimsical, mechanical creative steampunk pumpkin.
Start by penciling in where you would put the smile and the nose — everything else will come together around those two pieces.
The hardware that had threading, such as the screws and bolts, I screwed into the pumpkin using a drill and screwdriver. For the other pieces, I used a dab of fast drying or quick grab glue. Both have held up very well (but keep in mind that I don’t have kids either).
I blackened my pumpkin up with a rag after I applied all of my pieces; however, you could easily do that first. I also blackened the stem up a bit. That’s it!
The base is a toilet flange with a couple other random pieces glued on…. did I mention how random these can be? Have fun with it, you might even hold a friendly neighborhood competition. See who can create the best steampunk pumpkin!
Happy creating!
