Do you own a woodburning kit? Oh my goodness the fun that you can have! While I was home visiting my parents recently, my mom had these ‘Do It Yourself’ magazines (a Better Homes and Garden Publication). I was like a kid in a candy store browsing through all the incredible inspiration. One magazine had this fun project using cork and a woodburning pen! Soooo, my wheels started turning and I just happened to buy some cork trivets while at Ikea (in Dallas), so I couldn’t wait to share this project with you. This DIY Cork Trivet makes a fabulous Mother’s Day gift, housewarming gift and so much more!!
What I love-love-love about these is that the design won’t rub off, smear and it doesn’t need to be sealed! Wha?!? Let’s grab a few supplies: Cork Trivets, Woodburning Pen, Black Pen/Marker and a Stencil (optional, particularly if you’re good at free hand). The cost of this project was so incredibly minimal. The trivets were $3.00 and I got my woodburning pen for 50% off with a Micheal’s coupon (my cost $15.00). Aaaand I’m pretty darn sure that the woodburning kit will be put to good use time and time again {smile}.
Anywho, let’s get started. While your woodburning pen is warming up (follow the instructions according to the package), trace your design of choice onto the cork trivet with a black pen or marker. The stencil(s) I used were from my half bath stenciling project way back when. The lines will blend in as you burn the design, so don’t stress about it being too light, too dark or any imperfections.
And let the
woodburning corkburning begin {hee-hee}.
Depending on the tool you purchase (or own) for burning, the tip you use will determine how long it might take. I used a round tip and it took about 15 minutes. Easy breezy! Below you can see I’m making progress….
What do you think? Pretty fabulous, right? Here’s another fun twist!
Consider using this same technique for DIY Cork Coasters too!
Seriously — Oh the possibilities!! Father’s Day gift anyone?
Free hand a design, use your initial, doodle …. and so much more!
What are you waiting for?
There is all kinds of fabulous to be made!
Happy Crafting.

Not sure you will see this because of the length of time since you posted but, I found this on Pinterest. I’m so glad to finally find a tutorial that uses stencils instead of vinyl cut-outs. Thank you.
