This DIY boho decor on a budget transforms an old fence picket into simple decor that can warm up any space.

Turning discarded or unused items into something beautiful and functional is a rewarding process that combines creativity with sustainability. One such project is using an old fence picket as a canvas to mount a faux or dried stem for some DIY boho decor on a budget.

Making the DIY Boho Decor on a Budget:

Before starting, let’s gather all the necessary materials. I started by asking my husband if we had any damaged or old fence pickets in our shed, and I was thrilled to hear we did.

Supplies for Low-Cost Boho Decorating DIY:

  • An old fence picket (ensure it is clean and free from pests)
  • Hand saw or Chop Saw
  • A faux or dried floral stem (plastic or silk ferns work well, too)
  • A staple gun with staples
  • Paint in your choice of colors
  • Paintbrush
  • Sandpaper, optional

Instructions for Bohemian Decor on a Dime

Preparing the Fence Picket for Boho Decor

The first step is to prepare your fence picket. Here is what I started with.

damaged fence picket

If it’s an old, weathered piece of wood, you might want to sand it down to remove splinters and smooth the surface. Medium-grit sandpaper is suitable for this. Once the surface is smooth, you can paint the picket to give it a fresh look.

I chose not to sand mine because I wanted the finish to look a little more raw. However, I did use a chop saw to create a couple of different pieces, and I wanted the tops to be similar to the top of a fence picket.

Next, choose a paint color that compliments your décor. I went with a terra cotta color I had on hand from an older project.

Allow the paint to dry completely before proceeding.

Preparing the Stem(s)

While your paint is drying, prepare your faux or dried floral stem. Faux greenery is a great choice for this project because it requires no maintenance and stays green year-round. Depending on the design you have in mind for your mount, cut the floral strand into smaller sections if needed.

Another wonderful option is to use dried palms or leaves. I wanted to keep mine simple by using one stem.

Positioning the Faux or Dried Stem

Once the picket is dry, position the faux or dried floral stem on it. Arrange or place it in a way that looks natural and pleasing to you. This could be one stem centered, a cascading design down one side of the picket, or a more symmetrical arrangement across the top.

Attaching the Stem for DIY Boho Decor

Using your staple gun, carefully secure the stem to the picket. Place staples around the stem’s base, ensuring they are firmly attached to the wood.

Depending on the size and design of your faux stem, you might need to use several staples. If the stem feels loose, you can add more staples or use mounting wire or fishing line to tie it securely. Using wire or a fishing line may require using a small drill bit.

In the styled photos, you can see that I added a touch of paint to the staple, holding my stems in place. Of course, you’re welcome to attach however works best for you.

Final Adjustments to DIY Boho Decor

Once the faux stem is secured, trim any excess stems or leaves that hang over the sides of the picket, if necessary. This gives the piece a neat and tidy appearance.

If you’re using wire or fishing lines, hide the ends or tie them off discreetly.

Now that your stem is mounted, it’s time to find the perfect spot to display it. Since faux stems don’t require sunlight, you have more flexibility in where you can place your decorative piece.

Prop it on a bookshelf or hang it in a dim hallway, a cozy living room, or even an outdoor patio. This DIY boho decor on a budget is a project that can brighten up any space without the need for natural light or regular watering. #winning

Benefits of Upcycled Boho Decor

Creating this DIY Boho Decor using an old fence picket has several benefits. Firstly, it repurposes materials that might otherwise be discarded, promoting sustainability.

Secondly, the natural aesthetic of the wood and the faux stem can enhance the beauty of any space, adding a touch of greenery and nature. Additionally, faux plants require no maintenance, making them ideal for busy individuals or those without a green thumb.

Tips + Tricks for this DIY Boho Decor:

  • Choosing the Right Faux Stem: Some faux stems look more realistic. Choose a high-quality faux fern or dried palm closely resembling the natural plant for the best aesthetic result.
  • Painting Techniques: To achieve a rustic look, try dry-brushing a second color over your base paint to create a distressed effect. For a modern look, consider using stencils or geometric patterns.
  • Secure Attachment: Ensure the faux stem is securely attached to the picket. Although faux plants are typically lighter than real ones, you still want to ensure they won’t fall off over time.
  • Versatile Placement: This DIY Bohemian Decor on a Dime can be placed in low-light rooms or outdoor spaces with coverings.

Using an old fence picket as a canvas to mount faux greenery or dried botanicals is a creative and sustainable way to bring nature into your home. This project is a beautiful addition to your décor and a testament to the potential of upcycling and the beauty of decorative art.

With some basic materials, a bit of time, and no need for regular care, you can create a stunning piece that will remain vibrant and green all year round. So, roll up your sleeves, grab that old picket, and start your own DIY upcycled project today!

This DIY boho decor project on a budget is a perfect example of how you can create stylish and unique home décor without spending a fortune. Embrace the charm of handmade items and enjoy the process of transforming everyday objects into beautiful pieces of art.

I love a good trash-to-treasure makeover! Great job taking an old picket, that most people would discard, and turning it into amazing artwork!
