Abstract Heart Art and DIY Rustic Frame

I was recently challenged to create a DIY project with the pantone color of the year, Marsala by Valspar Paint® and Porch.com.  I thought a valentine’s project seemed appropriate; however, I think this Abstract Heart Art and DIY Rustic Frame could also make a great handmade wedding or anniversary gift too!

Supplies for Frame:
1×2 pine wood, (2-15″ pieces and 2-12″ pieces)
Kreg, optional
Pocket Hole Screws, four
Wood Glue, optional
Sandpaper

Supplies for Abstract Heart Art:
12×12 Canvas (mine was from Michael’s)
Valspar Paint® in Marsala
Paint Brush 
Stain in Weathered Wood and/or Provincial
Rags (for staining)

Once you’ve gathered your supplies, you’re ready to roll.  Keep in mind that you can do this with any size canvas, you’ll just need to altar the measurements of your frame.

Since we’ve already cut our pieces, you’ll now want to assemble the frame.

You’ll start by prepping your wood for assembly, using the Kreg (see photo 1).  I {love} our Kreg, oh the beautiful pockets it creates and it leaves such a clean look!  (see photo 2).  Add a little wood glue to each piece before inserting your pocket screws into each of your corners.  Before you know it, your frame is done!

I gave it a good sanding and beating (hee-hee) before staining it!  I wanted it to have a bit of a rustic look, so I use a flat head screw driver and other tools my husband had lying around on his work bench.  I originally wanted to frame the abstract heart art with pallet wood.  However, I didn’t have enough to make it work.  Improvising is something you have to be prepared for, so I thought I would stain it in Weathered Oak.  Ummm…. no go!  I would have had to do about 20 coats to get the color I wanted and I got no time for that {giggle}.  I ended up using both Weathered Wood and Provincial wood stain.  As you can see, the Provincial kind of stole the show!  I love it, nonetheless.

Now, on to paining the abstract heart.  I did a little testing on paper to know what I wanted.

I thought I could just free hand it.  HA!  My first attempt was a fail.  Soooo, I then had to paint the canvas white and attempt a do-over.  We all learn from our mistakes, right?  I cut out that heart (pictured above) and did a pencil outline of the shape, centered to the canvas.  SCORE!  I used a paint brush for this look.

And a little close-up of my little vignette…  I might have a small infatuation with floral frogs too!
It turned out great — even if I had to do a little more improvising than usual.  I have to admit that I love the abstract heart art paired with the stained frame.  What do you think?  Have you ever tried your hand at abstract art?
