Who’s ready to get their DIY on today? I teamed up with ScotchBlue.com to share a fabulous idea for you to use when entertaining! A DIY Chalkboard Serving Tray that will not only be a conversation piece, but it will also serve as a menu board, allowing your guests to know what dishes are what. You can thank me later {wink}.
CHALKBOARD SERVING TRAY
Supplies:
12″ x 1″ x 4′ wood board
Minwax Stain (Weathered Oak)
Brushes
Chalkboard Paint
ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape
Now we’re ready to get started. The very first thing you’re going to do is cut your board to desired length! I went with three feet in length. After I cut the board, I sanded all the edges so they would be a little smoother… then I was ready to dig in!
STEP ONE:
Round up all your supplies and prepare your work surface.
STEP TWO:
Stain your board. Depending on what stain you use, the color and darkness will vary. I applied 3-4 coats to get the desired color I wanted. Be sure to allow for ample drying time between coats. I think this stain contrasted beautifully with the chalkboard paint.
STEP THREE:
Measure and tape off where you would like your chalkboard section to be, using your ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape.
I placed a few serving bowls on mine to get an idea of how much space I would like for the dishes versus the chalkboard area. I decided to come in about 4″.
STEP FOUR:
Paint on your chalkboard paint. As many of you may know — sometimes plans change along the way on a DIY project. I wasn’t exactly sure how I wanted to handle the front and sides of the chalkboard area. I started out by not painting them, but had a change of heart…. (surprise, surprise). I’m very happy with my decision to go ahead and paint them.
Once everything is dry, carefully remove your painters tape and your chalkboard serving tray is now ready to par-tay with you and your guests! Please note that the board itself is not food safe, you’ll want to use dishes for serving the food (as pictured).
I used mine for the first time with a salsa bar, serving a mild, corn and bean and hot flavored salsas.
As you can see, it doesn’t overwhelm the table either Love it!
And below we get a little up close and personal.
Look at those lines! ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape to the rescue.
Isn’t she a beauty? I think so – and I love the stain color.
The chalkboard paint makes for a perfect touch too!

Hi JaneEllen! I hope you had a lovely Memorial Day. Thanks so much for loving on my project — and the galvanized tub. I bought that from Pick Your Plum last year, so I’m not sure if they still have any or not. HUGS!

I notice that on the step-by-step pictures you carefully taped off the edges so they wouldn’t get the chalk paint on them but in the pictures where you are actually using the tray to serve food it appears that there is chalk paint on the edges. Confused?
Kelly Rowe says
Hi Bonnie! In Step Four I explained that my plans changed a bit and I decided to paint the edges. Cheers 🙂

Oops, sorry. I guess I somehow missed that. I thought I had carefully read down through the entire instructions/directions. I guess I wasn’t so careful. 😮
