Washi tape is one of the most versatile craft supplies out there. It’s colorful, easy to use, and instantly elevates any surface with fun patterns and textures. When paired with chipboard shapes, it creates a lightweight yet sturdy decor piece that can be customized to match any style or season.
Whether you want to create a statement piece for a gallery wall, a cute sign for your office, or a fun DIY project for kids, this craft is budget-friendly, beginner-friendly, and completely mess-free!
Why You’ll Love This Washi Tape Chipboard Decor Project
Not only is this craft simple, but it also has so many benefits:
Budget-Friendly: Washi tape is an inexpensive craft supply, and chipboard shapes are widely available at craft stores for just a few dollars.
No Paint or Mess: Unlike traditional painted decor projects, washi tape requires no drying time and no messy cleanup!
Endless Customization: With so many washi tape designs available, you can create seasonal decor, monograms, or abstract designs in minutes.
Perfect for All Ages: This is a great craft for kids, teens, and adults alike!
What You’ll Need
Creating your own Washi Tape Chipboard Decor is super simple. Here’s what you’ll need:
Supplies:
- Chipboard shapes (letters, symbols, or seasonal cutouts)
- Washi tape in various colors and patterns
- Scissors or a craft knife
- Mod Podge (optional) for sealing
- Ribbon or twine (optional) for hanging
That’s it! Just a handful of supplies, and you’re ready to start crafting.
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Washi Tape Chipboard Decor
Step 1: Choose Your Chipboard Shape
Before you start decorating, pick a shape that fits your theme. Some fun ideas include:
- Monograms (great for initials or spelling out words)
- Seasonal shapes (pumpkins, snowflakes, hearts, etc.)
- Symbols (arrows, stars, or geometric patterns)
Chipboard is lightweight, making it perfect for wall decor or shelf displays. You can find it at craft stores, online, or even repurpose old packaging materials.
Step 2: Select Your Washi Tape Patterns
The beauty of this project lies in the mix-and-match potential. You can go for:
- A bold, colorful look by mixing different washi tape patterns.
- A minimalist style using monochrome or pastel washi tapes.
- A seasonal theme with festive tape designs (think pumpkins for fall, snowflakes for winter, or florals for spring).
Lay out your washi tape choices before applying them to ensure you love the combination!
Step 3: Apply the Washi Tape to Chipboard
Now for the fun part—decorating! Here’s how to get a neat, polished look:
- Start from one edge of your chipboard shape and press the washi tape down smoothly.
- Layer the strips side by side, slightly overlapping if necessary.
- Trim the excess tape along the edges using scissors or a craft knife for a clean, professional finish.
You can place the tape in different directions for a cool geometric look or keep it straight and uniform for a neat, polished effect.
Then you’ll take your Exacto knife and trim off the access tape, using the chipboard as a guide made the trimming easy breezy!
You’ll just keep doing this until the entire piece is covered. I only did the front because I knew the back wouldn’t be seen hanging on the wall.
Step 4: Seal with Mod Podge (Optional)
If you want your washi tape design to last longer, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge over the entire surface. This will seal everything in place and prevent peeling over time. Let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 5: Add a Hanging Option (Optional)
If you want to display your chipboard decor on the wall, attach:
- A ribbon or twine loop using hot glue.
- Command strips or double-sided tape for a damage-free hanging option.
I hammered a sawtooth hanger onto the back and added it to my gallery wall in my workroom. I couldn’t be happier! So cute, right? It’s truly washi fantabulous!
This step is optional, as your piece can also be propped up on a shelf or desk!
Creative Ideas for Your Chipboard Decor
Looking for inspiration? Here are some fun ways to use this DIY project:
1. Personalized Name Signs using Washi Tape
Spell out your name or a meaningful word like “LOVE”, “HOME”, or “JOY” using chipboard letters. Mix different washi tape designs for an eclectic, eye-catching look!
2. Seasonal & Holiday Decor
Create seasonal accents by using themed washi tape:
- Fall: Use warm-toned tapes with leaves or pumpkin patterns.
- Winter: Opt for snowflakes, silver, and gold.
- Spring: Floral washi tape will make any design bloom!
3. DIY Photo Props
Make cute chipboard props for parties or photoshoots! Think hearts for Valentine’s Day, stars for New Year’s Eve, or arrows for fun Instagram-worthy shots.
4. Kid-Friendly Art Projects
This is a fantastic craft for kids! Let them decorate their initials, favorite animals, or shapes. It’s a low-mess, high-fun activity that encourages creativity.
5. Desk or Workspace Decor
Create a mini inspirational sign for your desk with words like “Create”, “Dream”, or “Hustle”. A fun and functional way to stay motivated!

Wow! I am so going to copy this idea! I hope you dont mind! I saw your post on the link up at Trendy Treehouse…it was my first time to link up, so I hope I did it correctly.
Back to the Washi Tape, my youngest son picked out the same letters, spelling out his name, but I have them put away because I could not decide how to decorate them.
I just bought a couple of Washi Tape rolls, so I am going to get the letters out and let him create away!
Thanks!
