As I’ve gotten older, one of my favorite parts of the holidays has never been the presents under the tree. It’s always been the conversations around it. The stories. The laughter. The quiet moments that remind us what the season is really about. I know, a Christmas Quote Tree might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about holiday decorating. But it’s such a sweet and charming way to celebrate the season.
Since we’re celebrating Christmas in July, I thought this was the perfect time to share an idea that gives you plenty of time to gather inspiration before the holidays arrive.

When King of Christmas invited me to partner with them again this year, I knew I wanted to keep things simple. Rather than creating an elaborate Christmas display, I focused on one small tabletop tree and gave it a more thoughtful purpose. Sometimes the simplest decorations become the most meaningful traditions.
What Is a Christmas Quote Tree?
I wanted to do something a little outside the box this year. As I looked around my office, I noticed a stack of pre-printed quote cards I’ve had for quite some time. Almost instantly, I thought, What if these became the ornaments?
That’s when the idea for a Christmas Quote Tree was born. It’s exactly what it sounds like… a Christmas tree decorated with a variety of quote cards instead of (or alongside) traditional ornaments.
Each card features an inspiring or meaningful quote. Unlike ornaments that stay on the tree year after year, these cards are meant to be shared.
The more I imagined it, the more I loved the idea. Instead of decorating a tree simply because it’s what we do at Christmas, this little tree could strenghten conversation, reflection, and connection.
How to Create a Christmas Quote Tree
I used the King of Christmas 3′ Royal Fir Tabletop Tree (with 100 Warm White LED Lights), and honestly, it was the perfect size for this project. The realistic branches, and compact design made it easy to create a festive vignette without taking over the room.
Supplies I used:
- Gathered Thoughts Paper Cards (also here)
- 3/8″ Red Velvet Ribbon
- Wooden Bead Garland (from Hobby Lobby)
- Bowl of extra cards
I styled mine on our dining room buffet, but it would be just as charming on an entry table, kitchen island, coffee table, or office desk. And rather than filling every branch with ornaments, I purposefully kept the decorating minimal.

The quote cards became the focal point, while red velvet ribbon and a simple wooden bead garland added just enough Christmas charm. The result feels timeless, cozy, and wonderfully uncluttered.
Sometimes less really is more.
Christmas Quote Tree Ideas That Encourage Connection
While I used pre-typed quote cards for my tree, there are so many ways to personalize this idea. You could choose a mix of inspirational words or give your Christmas Quote Tree a specific theme. Consider using favorite quotes, Scripture verses, lines from Christmas hymns, family sayings, handwritten notes, favorite book quotes, or special Christmas memories.
You might even invite family members to contribute a few cards of their own. Children could write a favorite holiday memory, guests could share words of encouragement, or everyone could add a quote that has left a lasting impression on them. After all, kindness has a way of multiplying, and even a few encouraging words can brighten someone’s day.
Over time, the cards would become more than simple decorations—they would tell the story of the people who gathered around the tree.
A themed quote tree could be especially lovely, too. You might create one centered on hope, joy, gratitude, faith, kindness, or family. There really is no right or wrong approach. The goal is simply to fill the branches with words that make people smile, reminisce, and feel encouraged.
Invite Guests to Take a Quote and Leave Another
For my sweet little quote tree, I placed a bowl nearby filled with additional quote cards.

Family and friends can choose one that speaks to them and take it home.

They can then replace it with another card from the bowl.

Invite people to pause.
To read.
To reflect.
To carry a little encouragement home.
This simple exchange makes the tree interactive and invites guests of all ages—even the kids—to join in. In a season that often feels busy and full, I love creating small opportunities to slow down and notice what really matters.
Over the course of the season, the tree quietly changes as the quote cards find new homes. I love imagining someone tucking a chosen quote into a purse, displaying it on a desk, or passing it along to another person who might need those words. Long after the decorations have been packed away, those little cards continue to remind us of hope, kindness, joy, and the people who shared them.
Although I created this one for Christmas inspiration, the idea could easily be adapted for almost any holiday or occasion. A quote tree could share words of gratitude at Thanksgiving, love and kindness for Valentine’s Day, words of wisdom for the graduate, or favorite memories during a family celebration. With a few thoughtful cards, it becomes a special way to bring people together throughout the year.

A Christmas Tradition Worth Starting
Christmas in July gives us the gift of time. It gives us time to gather inspiration, create with intention, and dream about the season ahead before December’s busyness arrives.
The older I get, the less I’m concerned about filling every corner with decorations. Instead, I’m drawn to filling our home with things that inspire conversation and create memories.
Sometimes the most special decorations aren’t the ones with the most sparkle. They’re the ones that invite people to gather, share stories, and leave feeling just a little better than when they arrived.
Looking for a fresh Christmas decorating idea this year? Consider creating a Christmas Quote Tree of your own. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. All you need is a small tree, a few thoughtful words, and an invitation to share encouragement. It may be enough to begin a tradition your family looks forward to year after year.
And honestly… I can’t think of a sweeter way to celebrate the season

If this idea inspires you to create your own Christmas Quote Tree this year, I’d love to hear about it. Maybe your tree will become one of those traditions your family looks forward to year after year—one quote at a time.
